2 Timothy 2:22 — flee, pursue, and above all not alone
22So then, flee from the desires of your youth, yet truly, pursue justice, faith, hope, charity, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.
Two verbs of movement in opposite directions, plus a third element that usually drops out of the quotation: company. The instruction ends with other people, not in solitude.

The verse is almost always read as a warning about sex. The chapter around it is dealing with something else, and the broader reading is also the one closer to what Paul had been saying.
Where this verse appears
The letter is from Paul to Timothy, a young leader. Chapter 2 alternates images of dedication — the soldier, the athlete, the farmer, the workman unashamed — with warnings about conversations that corrode.
The next verse asks Timothy to avoid foolish questions because they breed strife, and the one after forbids quarrelling to anyone who serves the Lord. That is the immediate subject of the passage.
What it says
With that context, the desires of youth grow larger than they usually look. Nothing in the text restricts the phrase to sexual matters, and what Paul had been fighting was impetuousness, appetite for argument and the wish to win debates — vices well established in young leadership.
The two verbs are a deliberate pair. Fleeing alone leaves a vacancy; pursuing without fleeing never leaves the spot. The sentence joins the retreat and the target, which turns the instruction into a direction rather than a prohibition. Worth noting that our primary English text, the Catholic Public Domain Version, lists five things to pursue and includes hope, which many Bibles do not.
The most forgotten part is the last. It is not "pursue justice", it is pursue it in the company of people whose hearts are pure when they call on the Lord. Company is not decoration here: it is part of the method. Anyone trying to change alone is running half the instruction.
What to do with it today
If there is something you need to get away from, the verse suggests not stopping there. Choosing where to go is what prevents the return, because the vacancy is precisely what pulls you back.
And the most important practical question may be the one about company: who are the people walking this with you? If the answer is nobody, that is the first item to fix.
